Working 9-5

I debated on whether or not to write this post for a while, and then I decided against it. Not because I didn’t want to share this story, but because I was trying to learn from my mistakes.

I have since changed my tune. I feel like it’s something that needs to be brought to the attention of the Internet.

During the summer, I was asked to leave my job because of something that I wrote on my blog. I took my anger and vented about coworkers and customers in a humorous fashion and I guess there were people who didn’t think it to be funny. The blog was something I never talked about at work. I never said where I worked on the blog. Someone found my blog by doing some intense stalking of me.

I’m not going to lie, it hurt. Something that I loved to do so much, had cost me my job. Apparently, freedom of speech doesn’t apply anymore. I thought it was ridiculous that they used that against me. I went into a little bit of a depression over it. I had to pick myself up and move on though. I had to find another job.

I started my new job the first week of September. I didn’t hate it, nor did I love it. About 2 weeks ago, I got a call from one of the boutique owners here in town, and they wanted to talk to me about a job interview for a shoe store they had just bought. I talked to J about it, and we both agreed that it was a better fit for us as a family and we knew I would be a lot happier there. Now.. he’s started calling me a gypsy. Comedy, I tell ya.

I finish my two week notice on Thursday and start my new job on Monday. We are pushing to get ready to move into a new space, so it’s going to be a lot of work but I am ready!! It’s a perfect fit me, y’all. The use of social media, photography, organizing.. and HELLO?! SHOES!!

Anyway, back to my original point to this post. You may not be some anonymous on the Internet. And whatever you say, can and will be used against you. It’s all about your digital foot print.. You put it out there, you better be willing to let it cost you something important in your life.

Have you ever put something out on the Internet that you wish you could take back?

  1. I am so glad you’ve found this job.. it truly is the perfect for you. And did I mention I was jealous??

I can’t wait to hear all about your first day.

  2. I love that something so hard for you to go through has brought you to an even better place! All things DO work together for good!

  3. I once mistakenly hit the “reply all” button and said something in jest about a friend of mine. People who didn’t understand the dynamics of the relationship between this friend and me took it out of context and totally over-reacted. I had lots of ‘splaining to do!! I decided then and there never to put anything in print that might come back to bite me. Some people just have no sense of humor and can’t get over themselves! Too bad. The world’s a funny place!

  4. That major stinks about losing the first job, but holy moly, the new shoe job sounds freaking phenomenal!!!! As much as losing your job must have sucked (especially the reasoning behind it!), I feel like it’s a “everything happens for a reason” moment. Like in my fave mug of all time: http://www.amazon.com/Quote-Just-When-The-Caterpillar/dp/B000ELCN64 I die for that quote! SO true! Anyway – can’t wait to hear more about your new role… congrats :-)

    • Ooh love that mug! It’s similar to one of my favorite sayings.. “You have to want to be a butterfly so badly that you are willing to stop being a caterpillar.”

  5. Oh, that really stinks!! I am sorry othear that you lost your job, but so glad to hear that you’ve found one that is a perfect fit for you! That’s awesome news!! :)
There have been a few times that I wished I could take back what I said, and so mostly now, I just don’t ever say what I’m thinking. My job especially is really tricky and everything I see/do there is confidential. I LOVE my job, so not talking about it is hard, but handling that line between okay to say and too much is just too tricky, so mum’s the word for me.

  6. I have. I went on a rant about someone very close to me and about someone who hurt that person. Well the person very close to me was mad and was not talking to me so she told the other person and he threatened a lawsuit. I will say that everything I said was completely true and the only intention was to get my feelings out and see if people were in a similar situation as me not to cause harm to anyone as I kept my blog private. Well since the person very close to me knew about it, it gave the other person a whole lot to say even though there were no names. I just deleted it because it was not worth the stress. I mean I guess you could say I caved to pressures as I was not breaking any law because the person needs to research what needs to be proved for a deformation of character case but in any case I just deleted it because it was not worth the trouble. Now I am weary about anything I put online that is too personal and involves someone else.

  7. I am shocked by this story! But I’m glad there was a happy ending! :)

  8. Thanks for sharing about this part of your life! I do believe good things come out bad things! We live and work in a world where people are ready to knock you down because they are really jealous! Maybe they are just jealous and envious that you have a passion to blog and really open and touch other people…(like me)! We are not perfect and yes, We can say things that people LOVE to run off with a make a mountain of an anthill! You are so quirky, upbeat and just keep on going like the ENERGIZER Bunny! btw RTR!!!!
